Oktoberfest Travel Guide

You’ve heard of Oktoberfest, I know you have, there’s an Oktoberfest in nearly every country now so don’t give me that spiel. Even if you combined all the other Oktoberfest’s of the world into one, it still wouldn’t come close to the sheer scale and amusement you will have at the Munich original.

Oktoberfest is an annually held folk beer drinking festival in Theresienwiese Park Munich. The festival is so well attended, nearly 7 million intoxicated visitors stumble in and out the parks gates each year. To put that into perspective that is 35 times larger than Glastonbury, the most attended music festival in the U.K.

It is known as Munich’s fifth season so it’s worth noting the season actually starts in September and lasts just 4 weeks concluding on the first Sunday of October in a kind of alcoholic passion of the christ type deal.

In the October of 1810 a five day festival was held throughout the streets of Munich in honour of the marriage between Bavarian Prince Ludwig and his new missus Princess Therese Von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. Since then a festival has been held every year in honour of their special day; and whilst their marriage may have been a nightmare, the tradition that was born from it is the stuff of dreams.

Tips And Tricks To Surviving Oktoberfest

Learn the songs – Majority of the tents in Oktoberfest will have an Oom-Pah Band to help get you into the drinking spirit. You don’t want to be the table that doesn’t know its arsch from its ellbogen, so here are three songs to know before you go. Prost!

Women wear Dirndls, Men wear Lederhosen’s – Not only does it help you fit in but it also comes in very handy if you want to continue drinking into the early hours as you will receive free entry into a number of afterparty events just because you are dressed to impress.

Bring Enough Cash – Exactly what it says on the tin. There are cash machines scattered around Oktoberfest but be prepared for the time consuming wait to use the machine’s and the €3-€5 transaction fee.

Book a table – In my opinion this is key to a successful Oktoberfest as after 4 hours everyone inside the enormous 14 tents which are submerged inside Oktoberfest are cleaned and tidyed ready for the next wave of drunken individuals. What you don’t want to happen is to be stuck outside queueing to get inside the tents for hours and waste good beer drinking opportunities. I highly recommend booking a table through Vox Travel as they were fantastic in organising my trip to Oktoberfest and cannot thank them enough for creating such a memorable time for me and my friends.

Accommodation

Another helpful tip and possibly the most important is to book early. Reason being is even though we booked over a year in advance for Oktoberfest, me and my friends still ended up staying further outside the city centre than we original planned, due to the low availability and the increase of price for city centre hotels/hostels/apartments.

Flights

This is my final tip I promise. Book flights in advance to get the best deal. Obviously that’s a given but if the flights are still coming in rather expensive check to see how much it is to fly into Nuremberg as you can save yourself anywhere between £100-£250 just by flying into another beautiful Bavarian city and getting a short train ride from there.

  1. Hey there are using WordPress for your blog platform?
I’m new to the blog world but I’m trying to get started and create my own. Do you need any coding expertise to make your own blog?
Any help would be really appreciated!

  2. I have been browsing online more than 4 hours today, yet
I never found any interesting article like yours. It is pretty worth enough for me.
Personally, if all webmasters and bloggers made good content as you did,
the internet will be a lot more useful than ever before.
